What are dermal fillers?

Traditional “dermal fillers” are hyaluronic acid gels that are injected under the skin to revolumize the skin where volume was lost, or to support structures (weak chin, genetically hollow undereye, etc). Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is present in healthy, youthful skin. It is a long-chain sugar that holds water within the skin. It is generated and broken down regularly in our skin. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid that is cross-linked to give it specific properties (stiffer vs. softer) and longer duration (1-2 years of visible improvement, depending on the agent. Specific hyaluronic agents are chosen depending on the desired outcome, location to inject and depth of injection. 

What can dermal fillers treat?

When a feature is seen on the skin that is related to volume loss, restoring that volume with dermal fillers can improve the appearance. Examples include hollow temples, hollow undereyes, sagging cheeks, weak chin, jawline lacking definition, necklace lines, etc. 

What is the treatment and recovery like after dermal fillers?

During treatment, pain, pushing and pulling are possible sensations. Swelling and bruising are possible. Rarely, a nodule can occur and is readily treatable. Extreme care and specialized technique (such as use of blunt-tipped cannulas) is used to avoid treating near important blood vessels. A reversal agent (hyaluronidase) is available if needed.
