Cryotherapy
What is cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is the use of a cold gas (liquid nitrogen) to create a “controlled frostbite” when it is applied on the skin.
What can cryotherapy treat?
This procedure is best suited for skin growths that sit on the surface of the skin. Once the spot has been determined as benign, such as an age spot or skin tag – treating it for cosmetic purposes is a personal choice. Cryotherapy is often used when multiple spots or areas are to be treated in one sitting.
What is the procedure and recovery like after cryotherapy?
On the day of treatment, we review the procedure with you, you sign forms and we take photos of the treatment areas. There is a stinging sensation when we apply liquid nitrogen to the skin, and the area may throb for 10-20 minutes after the procedure. The area heals with a crust/blister over the following week (face) or two+ weeks (body). A few weeks after the procedure, the area will appear more red than surrounding skin. We avoid treating tanned skin and advise to avoid direct sun exposure to minimize rare risks of hyperpigmentation. We err on the side of caution, as treatment with liquid nitrogen can also leave the skin looking more white than the surrounding are (hypopigmentation).
