Hooded Eyelids
Why do hooded eyelids occur?
Hooded eyelids occur because of many reasons: over time, skin becomes more lax, volume is lost in the forehead/temple area and lastly the muscles that form frown lines and crows’ feet contribute to pulling the brow/lid down. It is interesting to think that our brows are “suspended” by various muscles pulling them down (muscles forming a frown line, crows’ feet) or up (muscle forming forehead lines)
How can we improve the appearance of hooded eyelids?
The gold standard treatment for hooded eyelids is surgery: either a brow lift or a blepharoplasty. For our patients who choose to defer surgery, we can use wrinkle relaxers like Botox to relax the muscles that pull the brow down. In patients who are good candidtes, this can give a more open-eyed or awake appearance. Skin tightening treatments like Thermage or Ultherapy can slow down the progression of hooded lids over time.
