Angiomas and Venous Lakes
What are angiomas and venous lakes?
Angiomas are benign growths on the skin that are composed of blood vessels. Spider angiomas are common on the face in children, women of childbearing age and older individuals. Cherry angiomas most commonly occur on the body in and around middle age.
A venous lake most commonly presents as a blue bump on the lower lip of a middle-aged or older individual. It is thought to result from weakening of the soft tissues around a vein due to sun exposure over a lifetime. Occasionally, individuals mention that a venous lake may shrink and grow again depending on temperature or activity level.
What treatments are available for this condition?
Angiomas and venous lakes are benign, and so may be left alone. They can be treated for cosmetic purposes. We employ an ExcelV+ laser that uses infrared. and green laser light that gets absorbed by blood vessels in the skin only, making it a precise, selective and targeted treatment. Often, one treatments is enough to reach the desired outcome, but a touch-up may be required at the follow-up visit. Results are durable, but as time goes on new age-related spots may appear (such as cherry angiomas).
