Sculptra
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a type of biostimulator. Biostimulators are a category of injectable agents that use our own body’s own ability to down more collagen, elastin and other components that restore the skin structure and its health. Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid – a material that is used in resorbable sutures. It is suspended and injected under the skin. It generates a reaction under the skin that causes our own cells to create more collagen. Often a series of treatments are needed to visibly revolumize, redistribute proportions or improve skin quality, depending on the treatment delivery.
What can Sculptra treat?
Sculptra can be used to slowly and steadily bring volume back to the face over larger areas, such as a hollow temples or deflated cheeks. Benefits happen slowly over 4-12 weeks. It is know to improve skin quality, often referred to as the “Sculptra glow“.
What is the treatment and recovery like after Sculptra?
During treatment, pain, pushing and pulling are possible sensations. Swelling and bruising are possible. Rarely, a nodule can occur (accumulation of Sculptra) and is readily treatable. Extreme care and specialized technique (such as use of blunt-tipped cannulas) is used to avoid treating near important blood vessels. Massage is performed in the office after the procedure and should be performed by patients after. The biostimulation effects can be observed over the next few weeks.
