Subcision

What is subcision?

Subcision is a process by which tethers under the skin that hold acne scars down are severed. This can be done with a specialized needle, a blunt injection instrument called a cannula or with other customized surgical tools. Cannula subcision is most commonly performed at our practice.

What can subcision treat?

Subcision is a procedure we use to do combination treatment of depressed acne scars. We most commonly combine it with laser resurfacing, a chemical peel, dermal filler injection or biostimulator treatment.

What is the treatment and recovery like after subcision?

On the day of treatment, we review the procedure with you, you sign forms and we take photos in our dedicated photo studio. The skin is cleansed depending on the procedure subcision is paired with, numbing cream may be placed on the skin. Once the cannula is placed under the skin, lidocaine is injected to make the procedure more comfortable. As we release the tethers under the scars, a pushing/pulling sensation can be felt.

Cannula subcision can cause swelling, and rarely bruising. Most of the recovery experienced by patients is usually related to the combination treatment that is done along with subcision. One of the main advantages of subcision is that it can help improve acne scars without increasing the risk of hyperpigmentation.
