Masseter Treatment

Masseter Treatment

The masseter is one of the strongest muscles in the body and plays an important role in chewing. In some individuals, it becomes enlarged over time, contributing to a broader or more square appearance of the lower face. Other patients may experience tightness of the area or headaches triggered by it. This may be related to genetics, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, or a combination of factors. Neuromodulators can be used to relax this muscle, leading to reduced tension and clenching, and if desired, a gradual softening of the lower-face contour in appropriate candidates.

Common Areas Treated

Masseter treatment is used to address jawline width related to muscle enlargement, as well as symptoms associated with clenching or grinding such as jaw tension or discomfort. The treatment plan will be adjusted depending on the size and bulk of the muscle, the desire to treat clenching alone and/or the objective of slimming the face.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Patients often seek treatment for a square shaped appearance to the face, jaw tension, or teeth grinding. Suitability depends on whether the masseter muscle is the primary contributing factor. A detailed consultation and assessment of facial anatomy are required to determine whether treatment is appropriate and likely to be effective.

What is the Procedure like?

Confidential photos are taken for your medical file prior to treatment to monitor your outcome. Consent forms are reviewed with you and signed when you have received all the necessary information. The treatment area is cleansed, marked with your customized plan, and the treatment is delivered via very fine needles. Pain varies from minimal to moderate depending on individual pain sensitivity – a squeezy “stress ball”, ice application or other distractions are often used to make the experience more seamless for patients who feel they need it.

After the procedure, injection sites appear like small “mosquito bites” that dissipate within minutes. Rarely, a small bruise may occur at an injection site. Avoiding alcohol and anti-inflammatory pain medication prior to treatment can minimize this risk. Acetaminophen (Tylenol©) can be taken without fear of increasing bruising.

When Will I See Results?

While the relaxing effects on the muscle are present at two weeks and clenching/grinding can reduce from that moment, slimming of the face is often observed progressively over 6-8 weeks after the procedure. The degree of change varies between individuals. The positive effects typically last three to six months, although this can vary between individuals. Effects soften slowly during this time. Patients who are keen to get the best out of the treatment visit our clinic 2-3 times a year.

A Personalized Approach

Masseter treatment is highly individualized and requires careful assessment to determine suitability and contribution to the contour of the face. A consultation is recommended to develop a personalized plan based on your anatomy and goals. When performed conservatively, it can improve facial balance while maintaining natural proportions and function.
